It's nice being able to see call rates before calling and I like how it tracks conversations better on the main screen.

If you use Skype to Skype calling then you'll love the new version's improvements in bringing everything together.

If you just use Skype to Phone then you will find the extra screen real-estate Skype takes up annoying and unnecessary.

Browser: Opera
Opera is a great browser; I don't think you can really argue with this. The main reasons I use it, however, are as such:
- Customizable address bar - I can use my address bar as a search on any web page rather quickly and, in my opinion, relatively easily. This beats the pants off of Firefox's built-in search bar, especially because I don't have to put up with two input fields on my browser.
- In-browser source viewing - This is terribly useful for when I'm looking at a page I've made and notice something's a bit off. I can open up the page source (the HTML that is sent to my browser, at least), edit it, reload the page from my browser's cache, and look to see how my changes have affected the page.
- It gets through my college's annoying pop-up THIS SITE IS BEST USED IN INTERNET EXPLORER thing that I get every time I try to go to it in Firefox.

Email: Thunderbird
I only really use this when I'm on my Linux partition, but I don't really have enough e-mail accounts to feel like I need something to consolidate them all. It's nice to have but I don't see MUCH of a point in it. For me, that is.

Instant Messaging: Pidgin
I only use this for AIM/ICQ but it's my favorite client I've tried so far and it's VERY EASY to port my settings from my Windows partition to my Linux one, which is a godsend. I mean, I'd just die if it weren't for my customized status messages!

Microblogging: Twitter
I use Twitter MOSTLY because I can update it from my phone via SMS. This becomes INCREDIBLY USEFUL for a lot of different things, especially because I have an unlimited texting plan. It helps me keep up-to-date with a good portion of my friends and it doesn't get too annoying... most of the time.

Music: foobar2000
I dunno, I've been using foobar2000 for a few years now and it's my favorite music player so far. The INCREDIBLE plugin community that's built up around it promises that I can almost always find a plugin to make nearly anything work, and that is a really nice thing to have. On top of that, there's a relatively active skinning community (not as active as, say, Winamp's, but nothing is that popular), and so I can find a good variety of customization options as well as being able to customize it myself with a bit of work. Okay, a lot of work, but ohwell, I'm fine with that.

Blogging: Wordpress.com
I'm also a Wordpress whore, I love the platform because it's easy-to-use, well-supported and documented, and, probably best of all, FREE. I love it and I'll probably stick with it for a long while. And when I do switch out I'll probably just switch out to the Wordpress.org platform.

It's pretty sweet, but the slidey effect kind of breaks the tab metaphor — and it looks a bit pants when the tab is half off the bottom of the screen. I'd suggest a straight switch would make it easier to see what's going on.

Interesting and could offer new insights on how to improve time management.

Good post. I agree with the pros and cons you've given. I actually think the cons are not as bad as they seem, but you're absolutely right - it does depend on which company has your data and whether they will last forever, or allow you to move your data elsewhere. I say this because I was thinking of salesforce.com, who in my eyes are a stable company and secure your data.

totally agree..... most ajax is technology for technology's sake... Flickr uses it to best effect in my opinion. Off the top of my head I cant think of the worst just because the bad uses are so obvious and forgettable.

Good analytical posting. But Web (i.e. World Wide Web) is different from individual items of inter-connected comouters, Internet and eventually Web that you have described.
